Lena vs. backpack

Hey everyone!

After a couple of last stressful days full of organising, barely any sleep and quite a while of my backpack and I getting along (all the stuff just would not fit in the beginning) I am finally on my way around the world. Currently sitting in Stockholm Airport waiting for my flight to Reykjavik. So looking forward to a few hours of sleep!!

Before I will start with lots of beautiful landscape photos I wanted to share with you what I brought on my trip. Luckily I get the chance to repack in February before heading into warmer weather so this is my ‘winter-packing-list’. Since I always take too much on my trips there are probably some things that I won’t be using/needing that much, so I will update this post when I get home. That way you will be able to see what worked for me and what didn’t and maybe get some inspiration.

The Backpacks

Backpacks

When we were in Hamburg I chose the Tatonka for my travels. It fits well (as far as you can tell balancing on one leg) and I love that it has a huge front opening that allows you to pack pretty much like a suit case. For the daypack I spend a while browsing through the internet. I wanted to have something that was still stylish but also functional (could fit my laptop etc.). Let’s see what the conclusion is after the trip.

  • Tatonka Yukan 50+10 Women
  • S-Zone Vintage Style Rucksack (15l)

Travel first aid

First Aid

To be able to take care of myself for a few days in case I can’t reach a doctor before that I wanted to be prepared and have some meds with me. Since I also sometimes get bad migraines I had to take something to help me through those days too.

  • Anti-baby pill (still a bit early I think)

wound treatment

  • Plasters
  • special Plasters for blisters (with new shoes you never know)
  • small bandage (just in case)
  • adhesive tape (who knows if we survive without an injury)
  • Bepanthen (wound cream for sensitive eyes etc)
  • Betaisodona (antiseptic wound gel)
  • Traumeel (for injuries or mosquito bites)
  • antihistamine (for bad mosquito bites)

having a cold

  • Sinupret (to clear your paranasal sinuses)
  • Tonsipret (to clear your throat from bacteria)
  • Lozenge (make a sore throat better)
  • nasal spray
  • marjoram butter (heal dry skin under your nose)

tummy

  • Iberogast (stomach flu)
  • Emesan (vomiting)
  • MCP (nausea)

migraine

  • Ibuprofen 600 (headache, pain release,…)
  • Novaminsulfon
  • Triptanes (different ones)

Toiletry Stuff

Toiletries

For my toiletry items I either tried to buy small size or filled it into different containers. Still it takes up quite a bit of storage. Especially the towels, but I dont really like those thin Microfaser ones because I feel like they just stick to your body, so I will have to live with it.

  • Toiletry bag (found a really light an flexible one)
  • Microfaser towel M
  • Microfaser towel XL
  • Turban (a towel where my hair fits in perfectly)
  • facecloth
  • Brush
  • Hair ties
  • Soap
  • Shampoo (both hair and body but will throw out the body one once empty since I have soap as well, filled up in silicon bottles)
  • Conditioner (filled up in silicon bottles)
  • Bodylotion (filled up in silicon bottles
  • Dry Shampoo (for bad hair days)
  • Sun cream
  • Aftersun
  • Deoderant (2x)
  • nail care (nail scissors, nail file, tweezers,…)
  • sanitary tampon
  • razor
  • tooth brush
  • toothpaste
  • small amount of make-up (mascara and powder)
  • make-up removal sheets
  • cotton buds
  • Labellos (and yes I’m taking 5 so I have one in every bag/jacket..)
  • Jewellery
  • Parfum
  • Handcreme
  • dental floss mini
  • Oil (for really dry skin)
  • Anti-blister-Stick
  • earplugs

Technical Stuff

Electronics
Sorry for the bad quality. Had to use another phone since my camera and phone had to be on it.

Due to the fact that I want to take lots of photos I also need quite a bit of technical stuff. It takes up quite a big part in my luggage to but I think/hope it will be worth it.

  • Macbook 15zoll +charger
  • iPhone 6s +charger
  • extra case for rougher adventures
  • water bag phone
  • headphones
  • eBook reader + universal charger
  • Canon 650D with the 18-55mm
  • wide-angle lens (10-18mm)
  • telephoto lens (55-250mm)
  • Tripod
  • remote-control release (small and with timer function)
  • Extra batteries + charger camera
  • SD cards (64Gb, 64Gb, 16GB)
  • Festplatten (500GB and 1TB)
  • USB-Sticks
  • Internet Stick (Still from New Zealand)
  • VW T1 music box (coolest thing on earth!!!)
  • Polaroid (Christmas Gift from my boyfriend)
  • Films for the Polaroid

Because the technic is usually pretty expensive and I do want to be using it after my trip, I have different covers for Laptop and camera to protect them a bit.

Protection

  • Laptop neopren cover
  • Camera neopren cover
  • Lenses neoprene cover  (I am not 100% happy with those since they are still to wide, but better than nothing!)

In addition to that I have bought some safety gear to keep thiefs away:

Safety

A few locks to be able to lock up my backpacks are pretty self explainable. The red one is for lockers in hostels. And then I bought this 12l Pacsafe. It’s made of a stabil wire with soft padding inside. With the wire at the top you can not only lock the bag itself but you can also place it through a stable bed, chair or something like that.

  • Pascafe 12l
  • 4 travel locks (4 digits)
  • locker lock (more stable than the other ones)

Documents

Documents

Although I keep pushing everything to the last minute I do like to be organized. So some of these things might seem irrelevant to others for me they are quite important.

  • boarding passes (in passport holder)
  • passport (in passport holder)
  • identity card (in passport holder)
  • credit card (in passport holder)
  • drivers lisence
  • international drivers license
  • ‘postbank’ card (in passport holder)
  • wallet (I actually swapped this one against a more travel kind of one)
  • some cash (in passport holder, changed into Icelandic Coronars at the airport)
  • immunization card (in passport holder)
  • diary
  • calendar
  • note book
  • passport holder (RFID-safety)

Other

Other

Just some other (could be) useful things I am bringing. I am really excited to find out in the end which was worth taking and which was not.

  • sleeping bag
  • inlett (as a light sleeping bag or an extra layer)
  • washing line
  • laundry wash
  • pocket knife
  • travel cutlery
  • packable plate and bowl
  • herbs (salt, pepper, herb salt, herb mix)
  • drinking bottle
  • porch
  • flashlight
  • lighter
  • duct tape
  • carabiner and bungee cord
  • zip ties
  • tissues
  • sunnies
  • luggage cover

Clothes

Clothes

And last but not least… all my clothes. I ended up ditching one of the hoodies on the left because I just did not have enough space. And also my beloved coat (the brown little package) had to stay home for Iceland, but Haroon will bring it so I can wear it in Kopenhagen.

  • tramping boots
  • comfy sneakers
  • jandals
  • warm had
  • scarf
  • multi-functional headwear
  • gloves

  • rainjacket
  • down jacket
  • 2 warm hoodies
  • 4 longsleeves
  • 3 T-shirts
  • 1 Blouse
  • 2 Sport shirts

  • functional underwear (2 long pants, 2 long tops, 2 short tops)
  • Trekkingpants
  • 2 jeans
  • 2 sport leggings
  • tights

  • 2 thermosocks
  • hiking socks
  • 2 bikinis
  • 7 socks (2 sneaker, 5 sport double-layer)
  • 10 underwear
  • 4 bras (2 normal, 2 sportbras)

It was a lot of struggle in the beginning and if I had packed a few days before (as I had planned it) and not in the last night at home I would have had time to perfect it, but lets just say that journey is not over yet. I now have 7 months to figure out where to put everything that it not only fits but you can also easily access everything. And also what stuff to leave at home the next time.

Sadly I forgot to take pictures of all the stuff packed in different bags, cubes etc. If I am going to have the luxury to have my own room once on this journey, I will take some pictures of everything packed up and add them to the post. That way you can see what packing cubes (Eagle Creek Compression) I used.

I hope it was interesting to read through. If you have any questions or want to share an opinion, feel free to use the comments!!

Only two weeks left!!

Hey everyone!

Welcome to my site!! I’m happy that you decided to follow along my adventures across the world. Not long now.. on the 10th of January I’ll fly out of the country and start my adventures in Iceland. I will spend nearly four weeks there before I head over to Copenhagen. So far I don’t really know what exactly I’m going to do. But luckily my wonderful mum gave me a great guide book about Iceland for Christmas and I also lent out a couple in the city library so I can spend the next days planning the first part of my trip.

Planning Iceland Worldtrip

For thoseof you wondering what I’m going to bring on my travels: I will travel with a backpack and just a minimalistic way of living. If you know me well you know that is going to be quite a challenge for me since I usually like to bring various outfits etc. I just like to be prepared for every situation but I’ll have to make some cuts I guess… A few weeks ago my mum and I took the whole day to drive to Hamburg and buy the backpack and some more equipment. I am slowly ticking off the last points of my packing list at the moment, ordering the last bits and pieces online.

Backpack Worldtrip
Still empty at the moment.

While being busy with planning and organizing the last things, I am also still hoping for a quick recovery. I managed to break my big toe while handball practice and after walking on crutches for two weeks I still have to wear this wonderful shoe.

Isn’t it great?!

My doctor promised to me that everything will be fine when I am supposed to leave so I’m keeping my fingers crossed that he will be right! Wish me luck with that.

Enjoy the last days 2017 has to offer and make the most of it!

Love,

Lena xx
